Autumn and winter fashion is fairly safe and predictable, with many trends staying around for years.  Often the same colour palettes are used year after year with leafy shades of greens, browns and russets usually make an appearance each autumn before the darker shades of black, navy and purple take over for the winter.

However, one fashion trend that never seems to go out of favour is military. Whether it’s the colour schemes of the armed forces that are used in fashion; such as khakis, sands, greys and browns, or the actual style of the clothing (which can come in an array of different colours), you can be sure that military will make an appearance each year.

Every autumn, stores are filled with coats that have taken their inspiration from the military dress coats of yesteryear.  Buttons, metal embellishments, belts and swing tails are essential factors to create the look.
Because of its fashion longevity, buying a few key military style pieces for your autumn/winter wardrobe will prove a worthwhile investment.  Not only will the items never go out of style, they can form an integral part of your capsule wardrobe because they are so versatile.
Military can however be a bit more dressed down and with the launch of Rihanna’s new film, Battleship, we foresee a more grungy look with lots of cotton drill combat trousers and cargo pants, along with camouflage material in various guises creeping into the shops.   To copy Rihanna’s look, pair trousers with a pair of army boots and vest.  We don’t recommend you go the whole hog and don a camouflage hat and jacket as well, unless you really are signing up for the US Marine Corps.

For a dressed up look, military fashion looks fabulous with a pair of killer heels to add the essential feminine twist to a very masculine look.  Plain coloured booties, platform pumps and stiletto heels look great, and both leather and suede work equally well.  Stick to neutral or dark colours for maximum effect—you really cannot go wrong with black.  Victoria Beckham has spent years perfecting this look and has even incorporated military style dresses into her own design collection.

Combining a fantastic military coat or dress with a pair of boots takes this fashion trend to a whole new level of fierceness.  Dressed up in either knee high, or even more fabulous, over the knee boots will ensure you have everyone standing to attention.
